Andres Montiel, a student from Merced High and the current ASB Vice President, says, “there may be more negative [repercussions] strictly for Merced High, with all the funding and technology the new high school will receive, Merced [High] might be put on the back burner.” Nicole McDonald, a student from MHS and the current Commissioner of External Public relations said, “students will feel more comfortable since it will be less crowded, but at the same time they have less of an advantage than the people at El Capitan and [that may] divide Merced [High] a little bit because El Capitan is such an advanced school compared to Merced High.”
I like what El Capitan has to offer for Merced as a whole. I know that bringing teachers from other schools into El Capitan will change the schools that they are leaving, but in the end it will help other students succeed and be more involved with activities or programs since schools will not be impacted with as many students.
Mrs. Allamio, a teacher from Merced High School, explains, “I like where I am at, once a Bear, always a bear. I do not see myself leaving. El Capitan will bring new changes to our school that is positive as well, such as a new rivalry school!” She also explains the reason why teachers would want to move from their campus to another is because they want to start fresh, with new rules and expectations, which El Capitan offers.
Everyone has different views about El Capitan. This school definitely stands out from the other high schools in the district and I feel it is a much-needed change that can lower the student population of the over crowded high school. In conclusion, El Capitan can change the way students experience high school. In the future, if technology is successful at El Capitan, we will see those changes in Merced High and Golden Valley. El Capitan has a promising future and I hope it leaves a lasting impact in our community.
