Rejection and Harassment: Life As An LGBT Teen

February 7, 2013 /

There are resources in Merced County. There is PFLAG, a nation- wide network of support that has
a chapter here in Merced for our LGBT community. It’s led by Donte Edwards and anyone can join, gay or straight. I have been to one of their meetings and it’s very nice. The people there were of all ages, they were friendly, understanding and supportive of each other. They also provided snacks and more resources in the form of pamphlets and flyers laid out on a table. For anyone looking for support I’d definitely recommend attending PFLAG’s meetings. They take place every second Tuesday of the month at United Methodist Church of Merced on Yosemite Parkway. You can find more information at www.pflagmerced.org. Other resources can be GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) if you attend Merced High or Buhach Colony High. There is also a Safe Club at Merced College.

I was lucky enough to have my mom kind of accept my sexuality eventually. She accepts me, but not my acts. She let me back in
our home and is now friends with my girlfriend. Still, it seems like harassment won’t ever really go away, and I can say I’m fine with it. I have overcome the journey and now push the remarks away. I’m ok with myself and that’s all that matters. I’m reminded of a something Vince said during our interview, “there are LGBT people that live
in this city, they are real, they have feelings and they are definitely part of Merced’s community.”

Unfortunately, if you’re part
of the LGBT community, there
is a good chance people will say cruel things, say mean things and won’t understand you, but don’t let them get to you because if you do all you’re going to do is make it harder on yourself. As a victim of harassment that’s the best advice I can give.
