SURVEY: California Voters Say Mental Health Care and Emergency Preparedness Are Best Ways to Prevent School Violence (and We’Ced weighs in!)

February 4, 2013 /

What did you think of the survey after taking it? Is there any way it could have been better or more effective?

Jesus, 17:  The survey is about a recent issue and is directed to voters so I thought it was good. It could be more useful by having students take it as well or by leaving a section where the responding person can add comments, like a free response section.

Kalvin, 17: I didn’t like the survey, it was too long. Maybe if it was shorter and they got it out to more people it’d be better.

Diego, 18: I think the survey can get a lot of really good information from people. I also think they should ask students how safe they feel in school and why.

Lisa, 16: The survey should have taken by teens and children because adults don’t know what is going on in schools! I know the survey was given to adults because they have the power to vote but I believe that if children and teens took the surveys and adults looked at the results and saw how we felt, we’d feel a little bit better.

Jjakoba, 16: I think it was pointless to ask voters. They should have asked students to help voters make better decisions.

Alyssa, 19: I thought the survey provided a lot of options that weren’t just one sided. It could have been more effective by asking those who are directly affected or having younger voters take the survey.

Ana, 16: I thought the survey was a good way to see what’s going on with school violence. To make it more effective I think students or even staff at schools should have taken it.

What is your opinion on mental health counselors and other counselors at schools? Do you think they are helpful? Do you have an adult at your school, not necessarily a counselor, that you feel you can talk to?

Jesus: I think that mental health counselors in schools are important. They can help prevent violent outbreaks and teach students how to handle their emotions. In my experience, they have been helpful.

At my school, there are a few adults that I feel I can talk to. These include some of my teachers of past years and one of the office assistants.

Kalvin: My opinion on mental health practitioners and counselors is that no, they shouldn’t be in schools more; they are perfect where they are. My experience is they are not useful.

I can’t talk to anyone at school because I find out that teachers talk to each other about students so I keep everything inside.

Diego: I think that we do need mental health counselors because anyone can be unhealthy mentally. Honestly, I don’t think school counselors are good at their job. Personally, they never even helped me and I never knew what they did until my junior year at my school.

At my school, I don’t know any adults that I feel I can talk to. I feel like everyone at Yosemite High School is just doing their job to do it, not caring if they’re doing it right or wrong.

Lisa: At the high school I’m currently going to there is no counselor and if there is, the school has never introduced them to us.

At my school, there is no adult that I feel like I can talk to. The teachers are so focused on teaching us the curriculum and disciplining us I don’t even think they know half our names. It’s sad.

Jjakoba: I think counselors are pointless. They all anger me because they don’t help, they threaten a lot and act like they know how you feel.

Yes, I feel like I can talk to Mr. Duecette who is a teacher at the school next door.

Alyssa: In my experience and opinion, the younger the student the more time and effort a counselor may put into helping the student. Not only necessarily effort but an elementary school counselor may not have to handle as many students as a high school counselor might. In my experience school counselors are very useful.

Ana: Mental health counselors and other support would be great! It’ll let students know they aren’t alone and have someone to talk to.

At my school, I do have people to talk to. I’ve gained a close relationship with my English teacher Ms. Bond and she has given me good advice with all that’s going on in my life right now. I also have a mentor at school who is also helping me with my problems in life right now and is actually helping me find a job.
