A lot of things have changed over time and there are some things that we don’t have that we once did. For example, we no longer have gas stations in El Nido and we have only one convenience store. That is a huge problem here, one that Mrs. Iniguez has faced throughout her years working at El Nido Elementary. She currently comes from Planada to El Nido and she has to go all they way to Merced to get gas. “My life would be so much easier if we had at least one gas pump here,” she stated.
Some young people see advantages to living in El Nido, though they also share in some of the difficulties of the area.

“I really like living here because it is calm and you know everybody but maybe having more stores and a gas station would be helpful to us out here, because I want to play sports but my parents can’t afford to pick me up from school everyday,” shared Brenda Espinoza, a youth who has lived in El Nido her whole life.

People out here have disadvantages like being miles and miles away from a gas station, stores, and not having lots of things to do — but there are also the good things about El Nido, like being in a peaceful community where nothing dramatic really happens, and just the general feeling of safety here.
To me, El Nido is a pretty cool place to live, even though it is super small and unknown by many people. It continues to be funny to me that people don’t know El Nido exists, because our school actually gets involved with the more known schools in Merced, though sporting and other events. Hopefully people will become more aware that this place they’re always driving by, with a few houses and a lot of farmland, is actually El Nido!
