On Friday, November 1st, 2024 there was a workshop held at The Merced Library about how to support the LGBTQIA youth in this city and county. But sadly there was not one person who had shown up to learn from our educational event. I attribute this to something other than the people not wanting to come, but simply not being informed that this event was even going on in the first place, which is not the fault of the organizers, or myself for advertising this. But it is the fault of the county, and slightly part of the library, for not having any advertisement to let people know this event was even being held in the first place.
This being said, even though we didn’t have anyone to teach about how to support the LGBTQUI+ Youth of the county, it was a great opportunity to refresh ourselves, me and my, now former, Program Coordinator , about how to support the youth ourselves. Afterward, we both got to connect with each other over a few things we both found an interest in and things that have happened in the past to us.
One of the things we talked about, and supported each other’s artistic hobbies, sharing our original characters that we have made between ourselves, and then our personal beliefs, and other things among this topic.
With all this being said, just because there is an event that hasn’t gone as expected, or hopped, it’s not a wasted opportunity. Use that time to meet someone new, catch up with your Program Coordinator, or possibly even talk to that one coworker that you’ve been meaning to strike up a conversation with, and even possibly develop a friendship with. Don’t let an open opportunity become a wasted opportunity.
