I think the border has a great impact here. There are many families who have migrated and even though the border is left behind there are lots of barriers within our communities for these new families coming in around health services, communication and education.
I think it’s important to talk about these issues for our families who have recently experienced these type of things, so they are able to express themselves and connect with other people in the community that can actually help them. A lot of our families don’t want to accept help. Within our culture sometimes it’s not the norm, but we need it.

The documentary brought back how I grew up. My father was an undocumented immigrant. He came here and he got deported, he came here and got deported, and he came here and got deported. I was lucky enough to be the first generation born here in the United States.
I think the thing that stood out most about the documentary was the two young men getting ready to cross the border. I can relate to those two gentlemen. All they want to do is work and support their family, which is the American Dream.

The border affects us here in Merced because people come and they still have ties in whatever country they came from — Mexico or otherwise. The border divides us and it creates a problem because people are undervalued by it, like when it comes to health care.
I would like to see a health plan like they have in Canada that covers everyone, even undocumented folks, if they actually reside for a certain amount of time there. It ends up being cheaper and they prevent the kinds of long term complications we see here now. I see people coming in with kidney failure, with heart attacks and cancer. These are all things that could have been treated earlier to increase the person’s quality of life and be a lesser cost to society in general.

After watching the movie, the truth is I felt sad. Everything that we saw happening, I lived it personally. Seeing the two men about to cross the border impacted me greatly. I felt they were my parents and my siblings. I heard them talking and I saw the risk they faced. I saw how they risked everything for their families in Mexico.
